What changed
Home Office guidance on secure English language tests (SELTs) says that a person who cannot access their eVisa may be able to use an expired biometric residence permit (BRP) or biometric residence card (BRC) as ID at a UK test centre. The test has to be taken no later than 24 months after the expiry date on the card, or by 31 December 2026, whichever comes first. The original card has to be brought on the day.
Who it affects
People taking a Home Office approved English test in the UK who plan to use an expired BRP or BRC as ID. This may include people preparing for the B2 English requirement for new Skilled Worker applications or for settlement from 26 March 2027.
When it starts
The 31 December 2026 end date was added to the guidance on 8 June 2026.
What it does not change
People whose identity can be checked through their eVisa, using a share code, do not need to show a physical document. Other accepted ID, such as a valid passport, is not affected.
